Empowering Futures Through Soccer Scholarships

Join us in honoring Giovanni Vitrano’s legacy by supporting local student-athletes through our annual scholarship program.

Our Story: Born From Community Love

In November 2021, the Tallahassee community was shaken by the tragic loss of Giovanni “Gio” Vitrano, a beloved 20-year-old former Leon High School soccer star and Tallahassee Community College honors student. Giovanni was described by his former soccer coach as “a larger than life kind of guy that was well loved by the Leon Soccer community” and was known for his infectious spirit, unwavering positivity, and ability to bring people together.

What happened next demonstrated the true power of community. Within days, a GoFundMe campaign organized by family friend Mike Fahmie raised over $29,000 between November and February, with support pouring in from strangers who had been touched by Gio’s story. “I’m so overwhelmed by the love that everybody has shown and still does,” said Ron Vitrano, Gio’s father.

From this outpouring of love and support, the Giovanni Vitrano Foundation was born in 2021. What began as a family’s way to process grief has evolved into a powerful force for good, transforming tragedy into opportunity for deserving student-athletes across the Tallahassee area.

What We Do: Transforming Lives Through Education

The Giovanni Vitrano Foundation exists to honor Giovanni’s memory by supporting exceptional student-athletes who demonstrate the same qualities that made him special: leadership, resilience, work ethic, and commitment to his community. Through our scholarship program and annual Gio Cup tournament, we’ve created a sustainable way to turn tragedy into triumph for deserving young people across the Tallahassee area.

Since our founding in 2021, we’ve awarded over $37,000 in scholarships to twelve outstanding student-athletes. Every dollar raised goes directly to scholarships—our foundation is 100% volunteer-run, with board members donating their time and expertise because they believe in our mission. This commitment ensures maximum impact for every donation we receive.
